branding is not a logo, and we need to talk about it
your logo is one piece of a much bigger puzzle. here's what branding actually means and why it matters more than your font choice.
Somebody, somewhere, decided that branding equals logo, and we have collectively been suffering the consequences ever since. We get it. Logos are tangible. You can point at them. 'Yes, that swoosh, that's our brand.' Except, no. It's really not.
Your brand is what people feel and think when they hear your name before they've even seen your logo. It's the tone of your texts back to customers. It's whether your website feels trustworthy or feels like it was built in someone's basement in 2009. It's consistency, over and over, until it becomes a reputation.
Think about a business you genuinely trust. We'd bet money it's not because their logo is particularly clever. It's because every interaction with them feels the same: same tone, same quality, same vibe, whether you're reading their website, calling their office, or seeing their truck drive by.
A logo without a brand behind it is just a pretty picture. We've seen gorgeous logos slapped onto websites with confusing messaging, inconsistent tone, and zero personality. Guess what? Nobody remembers them. Meanwhile, a slightly imperfect logo paired with a brand that actually feels like something? People remember that.
When we work on branding with a client at Peak Marketing, the logo conversation usually comes near the end, not the beginning. First we figure out who you are, how you talk, what you stand for, and what makes you different. The visuals follow that. Not the other way around.
So yes, get a good logo. But please, for the love of all things marketing, don't think that's the finish line. It's barely the starting gun.
