you have eight seconds to keep someone on your website

eight seconds. that's it. here's what that means for your homepage, and why most websites lose visitors before they even scroll.

By Stephanie Landon, Content Writer

Eight seconds. That's roughly how long you have before someone decides whether to stay on your website or hit the back button and forget you ever existed. Eight seconds is not a lot of time. Eight seconds is barely enough to read this sentence twice.

And yet, so many websites spend that precious window on a giant hero image, a vague tagline like 'Excellence in Service Since 1998,' and absolutely zero indication of what the business actually does or why anyone should care. By the time someone figures it out, they're already gone.

Here's what needs to happen in those eight seconds: visitors need to instantly understand what you do, who it's for, and what to do next. That's it. Not your whole company history. Not five different services crammed into one paragraph. Clarity, immediately.

At Peak Marketing, we've redesigned websites where the original homepage looked beautiful but told you nothing. Pretty fonts, nice colors, zero clarity. Once we rebuilt them around a clear headline, a clear offer, and an obvious next step, time on site went up and bounce rate went down. Funny how that works when people actually understand what they're looking at.

Your website is not a digital brochure meant to be admired. It's a tool meant to convert a stranger into a lead. Every second someone spends confused is a second closer to them leaving for a competitor whose site made more sense.

So look at your homepage right now, today, with fresh eyes. Could a stranger understand what you do in eight seconds? If the answer is 'well, if they scroll down a bit,' that's a no. Fix it before someone else does it better.
